arrived Monday hot hazy humid.....aka HHH !! Windy, we fished 10am to 9pm.......found few NP with largest at 3 lbs......LM largest 2.5 lbs....despite fishing specifically for NP and/or walleyes had trouble keeping Bass from snacking on our presentations !! Minimal if any effort spent on Crappie on 1st day. Day 2 Tuesday again high winds...HHH and almost intolerable. But fished all day anyways cause we had action all day long......we had multiple "slammers" this day primarily on perch colored or Hot tiger colored cranks...landed few. My brother aka "livebait "wanted to try his hand at fly fishing for crappies and I'll be d**ned if he didn't succeed. Overall he caught maybe 20 decent sized crappies, BUT this year no "slabs" found, BUT certainly enough for our fish fry Tuesday. Day #3 we found perfect conditions....cloudy, light winds, warm, coupled with our typical early start....providing us to take our first cast at 5am at our 1st spot, we now refer to as "Catfish Cove ". While tossing (again) 3/16 oz. white roadrunner tipped with a 4in shiner, several Bass were taken no 'eyes or NP.....BUT on back to back casts I caught a 8.1lb Catfish which battled me for 15 mins on 4lb ultralite.....only to be outdone by a 12.4lb Catfish.....again on 4# ultralite, this time a 20 min battle ensued. In 35mins I boated over 20lb of catfish in 2 casts on 4# ultralite. I am still on cloud nine!! "livebait" was laughing his ass off every time the cats would make a run.......listening to the extended squeal......... BUT, you know I took the opportunity to rub it in to livebait while "playing" these beauties, especially in light of his previous "misplay" in the Narrows on a previous trip. Best part of this it was only 655am after both fish were boated......photographed, and released, yes released! We decided by 9am to move onward to Lonesome Bay/Devils Graveyard......Well that proved to be an excellent decision by "livebait", Not long after our first troll started we landed several nice bass 2.5-3lbs. MANY NP with 2 (~ 20 in ) with fresh battle scars with fresh blood. One of which had a huge fish attack "livebaits" soon to be landed 20in NP. This freaking fish rolled after spitting out (and injuring) the 20in NP 20yds from the boat and was the largest fish I had ever seen. FYI when I was growing up in Utica my dad took me NP fishing at Delta Lake and I landed a 19lb NP....This was easily a 30 lb fish of some sort (probably bigger). But for whatever reason the fish were all on a feeding frenzy here and we were not about to leave. All but walleyes anyways. Don't know the exact total #'s of quantity by species but if I was to guesstimate....just on this day alone 2 catfish (as previously described above) NP 20-24, with biggest 29in....LM 12-15 with biggest at 18in, SMB 10-12 with biggest at 2.8lbs. ZERO eyes!! Although we do know eyes were hitting near the weeds and we fished primarily the shoals. Finally we ended our day at 830pm......giddy from the best alltime single day production in our history of visiting BL. Now day #3 HHH (again) no wind and "livebaits" right knee looks like a grapefruit.... probably a ligament tear courtesy of his 80# yellow lab. A blindside hit!! Anyways Thursday was as bad as Wed was good! We caught a few small panfish, one 2.9lb LM and a 2.4lb SM. At noon we decided to go in and have lunch.......then decided after seeing Friday was more of the same weatherwise to call it a trip! Overall probably the 2nd best trip ever....but without a doubt Wed was by far our best single day ever.........livebait, I hope your knee is not as bad as it appears. Hope to get up again in Sept but "livebaits" and my schedule may possibly preclude this, this year.
