Hi All, Well I just got back from the lake this A.M. In the 15+ years i've been coming up for the opener this was the worst fishing year on record for me personally. In 4 days of fishing I caught 9 pike and 3 bass. I was on the water for an average of 10hrs a day. I worked lonesome, big, and Back Bay and about every spot in between. The biggest pike of the weekend was 25" and that's amongst 10 guys !!!!! I typically throw a #5 mepps. This year I threw everything in the tackle box at em including minnows. I almost threw the tackle box in the lake out of frustration. In the past it was nothing to catch 25-30 a day with several in the 25"+ range. What happened to the lake. I cant find any significant weedbeds (cabbage) And who changed the wind direction to Due North all day everyday ? Two of the guys from are gang decided to stay the rest of the week and i can only hope they come home with some postive results. Is the lake getting fished out ? Are the "black ducks" (comarants) hurting the lake ?...I'm not telling anyone or bragging about the lake anymore either !! I noticed a LOT more boats and a lot of people casting for Pike. I hope someone can restore my faith in the lake I love so much. Tight lines and good luck to all of ya ! Gibby

FYI p.s. I just read my thread and dont think those years I caught 25-30 a day that they came home. We keep fish one day for the fish fry and usually not a limit either. And we used to set a "camp" size of 25". I dont want you to think i was the guy who fished it out (lol)...

Gibby, do you think the north wind could have been your problem? You might have been dealing with a stagnated front that put the fish down. In my three separate weeks last year fishing ranged from poor to very good. My fishing diary for the periods indicates that most of the poor to fair days were accompanied by a north wind.

Fished from Wed afternoon (11th) through Saturday the 14th. Four guys, two boats. Pike and bass were fairly active on Wednesday evening, but a cold front blew through and we woke up to temps in the low 30's on Thursday morning. The only fish that would hit for the rest of the trip were smallies. The pike completely shut off. We still had a good time, but the fishing was not nearly what it was last year.

Four of us were at the lake 16th - 19th. Fishing is extremely tough. Monday we got to camp about 11:00am and were fishing by 11:30am. Fished lonesome bay, brown bay, lower deep bay, orchard bay and had little luck. Between the four of us got 5 pike, a few largemouths and a few smallies. Pike size was all around 18" to 22". Smallies were very healthy 15" footballs and the lg mouths same as the smallies. All fish back in the lake. The wind Monday afternoon had to be gusting to around 30 mph or better. Leaving Orchard bay and heading for Lower Deep bay ment fighting 4' white caps, not fun. Tuesday we did manage to get a few pike for our yearly fish fry. The rest of the week went about the same as Tuesday, fishing our butts off for very few fish. The fish that were caught were in very good condition. I fished with Walleye guy and we averaged between 10 and 12 hours a day on the water and in 3 1/2 days boated about 25 fish between us. Pike was our target, caught pike, lg mouth, smallies and 1 perch by accident. Lures that were used, mepps #5, #4 red/black fury & chartreuse , spinnerbaits in red, chartreuse, gold, buzzbait in black. Everything worked but the fish size was down from the last few years by about 6" each. Weather was colder then we've had in past years for the same week. I'll be back up in the fall, hope things turn around by then. BUT, as always, we all had a great time and are already looking forward to the next trip to BL. Ridg

Ridgerunner: Was there a prevailing wind while you were there and if so, from what direction?

Ridgerunner: Was there a prevailing wind while you were there and if so, from what direction? Pama Monday was out of the SW. Tuesday and Wed. winds laid down a bit, were less then 10 mph, but were coming out of the northeast primarily. The wind worked for most drifts in the bays we fished but Monday the speed was tough for boat control. Even when you thought the wind would stay steady out of a certain direction it would change for a while, really made boat control interesting. Already looking forward to Sept 12th, thats my next time up to BL. Good luck, Ridg.

Made it to BL June 2nd -5th. What a time! Tried some new spots this year and it paid off big. Lots of pike in the 26-28"range. 32" took the trophy this year. At one point at lower big bay we tripled up on three really nice pike. Some really nice bass broke up the monotony of catching all the pike. Awesome weather to boot. Very low winds and sunny. Our hot spots this year were: the back end of grindstone, sitz bay, middle of lonesome, just outside lower big bay. Can't wait for next year! ;D ;D ;D

Hey Buzz, where did you stay? I was up there the 2nd through the 5th. If you happened to see a fire engine-red triton with jet drive that was me. How was the rest of your fishing? Ours was great. FISHNGUY
