Leeches

I got this from a Canadian friend. I've tried it on a few lakes, how well it works depends on the abundence of leeches in the lake and where you put it. Take a coffee can, plastic lid and 10'-15' (more if needed) of 1/4" clothes line. Poke a hole in the middle of the lid big enough for the rope to slide easily thru it. Now poke a hole in the middle of the bottom of the can, make this hole a little snugger. Take a nail or a drill and put holes in the sides of the can, favor the bottom half, 1/8" to 3/16" is plenty, don't want them to big. Now, feed the rope thru the lid and thru the bottom of the can. Tie a knot on the end so it won't pull back thru the can. Put a rock in the can for some weight. Put some fish guts or chicken parts in the can, slide the lid down and place on can and sink it. Tie it off to a tree or rock. The leeches will go thru the holes and engourge themselves on the guts which in turn will make them to big to get back out the holes. You can tie the can to your boat then and use it like a bait pail. Lift it out, water drains out, grab your leech and hang it back over the side. Make sure you're allowed to do this where you are at.

I consider myself a pretty rugged guy. However, there is something about leeches that just turns me away. I have used 5" black, brown or blue porkers in place of them with good success. Maybe I can get my fishing buddies to start baiting my hook for me. By the way if leeches are abundant in Black I think I could get past them for the sake of a few good fish. Anyone else try them? I haven't used them on Black Lake, but they have saved the day for me more than once on Lake Erie. Why would walleye suspended at 70' over 90 FOW hit a leech? I can see drifting on the bottom, but these were suspended fish and would not hit anything we threw at them except the leeches. And when we began using them they hit 'em like crazy. It did take some getting used to as far as baiting up with them, but hey I was desperate.

Comeon, guys... Leeches are actually pretty cool... Scientists are working with them to try and unravel the compound that they use to keep blood from clotting when they attach. They hope to use it in a drug that will prevent or disolve blood clots that cause things like strokes and heart attacks in humans. In addition, medical science has gone back to leeches to bleed wounds that might otherwise cause gangrene and the loss of limbs and tissue in humans. The little buggers have actually saved lives! The next time you come in contact with a leech give it a little sip to show your appreciation!!!

And when they do find this compound I can buy it and use it as a fish attractant. FISHNGUY
