Its hard to beat a jig/minnow combo bouced SLOWLY along breaks close to deeper water.
Trolling crankbaits in about 3-6 ft. of water along rocky shorelines works great at dusk and after dark.

My best luck ever was trolling out of Mile Arm, from the weed line, through the center into the narrows, dragging big copper colored Blue Foxes and #5 Mepps spinners.

I like to use Johnson Silver or Gold minnows thu the narrows. I've had good luck with #5 Mepps and pike bait in the Wood Island Shoals.

Buzz- Welcome to the site! Like you, first of the year is a trying time. Our camp is on an island so we have two docks and three boats to get ready. My wife (Deder) does not like mIce (biggest ever understatement) so I send most of the first weekend making sure the mouse traps and any trials are cleaned. Where is your camp?

We have what used to be John Ledue's Cedar Rock. We are above Mile Arm and the Old long white boat house. We are South East of the entrance to the narrows (I guess). I am still learning the lake. I don't know what our little bay is called. George Sibley is a neighbor and has been on the lake for years. My other neighbor is Randy a taxidermist from the Rochester area. We enter from Gouverneur direction via Thornton's Lane off Hutton Road. Not Hutton Farm Rd. We plan to be up there first weekend in May. Our place is one of the smaller commercial operations that was for sale for 2 years or more. We just bought last year June 1st. We call it "Fishy Camp."

Buzz,
Do you have cabins or campsites to rent. . . or is it just a place for you and the family?

Mr Simon
well, currently we are just trying to enjoy the place. my extended family seems to have grown with the camp purchase. ha ha... I am interested in some renting, but the rest of the family seems to out vote me, the owner!! So as of this year...no renting, not yet.......

Last year I caught two limits of walleys opening day using a perch colored huskey jerk bait. I did it a number of times right up into the middle of June. Then the walleys stopped chasing. P.S. All fish released back to the lake. I love walleys but Black Lake went to many years without a good population of walleys. They are finally starting to come back in decent numbers, Please Practice "Catch and Release".
