Are there other, smaller lakes in close proximity to Black Lake that are worth fishing? I pose the question because it always occurs to me on that Black Lake day we've all had where we're sitting in the cabin waiting for the d**ned wind to stop blowing!

Finally got in, good, welcome. There are a few lakes around Black. I've fished Yellow Lake And Millsite. Yellow is back toward Ft, Drum and Millsite is by Redwood. You also have Payne and Muskellunge. They are near Yellow Lake. I'm sure there are more that I don't know about.

Down in Redwood is Buterfly lake. As a matter of fact, the creek that runs out of Mile Arm Bay WOULD go to Butterfly, if it wasn't dried up in spots. I heard it's a killer Crappie/Northern/Bass spot

We got on Yellow through one of these Friend of a friend of a etc. It was a private little developement. No electric and no water at the cabin. Gas lights and outhouse. Was kinda neat, just like the good ole days, peekin' through the quarter moon. Was told it was a good northern lake and they had some slammer heads nailed on the walls in the cabin but we didn't get any. Got a lot of LM but were out of season. Shallow and weedy with long deeper channels in the weeds but they are eratic and hard to follow. Nice swamp like area at one end, lots of pads and channels. I think there is one camp at one end of the lake, looked like they had about 5 rustic cabins with a central shower and crapper. Mill Site is DEEP. Had 100' along the one long island. Suppose to have Lakers in it. Again we didn't get any but didn't devote a lot of time to them. Was a pretty good SM and Northern lake though. I have heard of Cranberry but never fished it. Think about Chippewa Bay. Lots of islands to hide behind if the winds up a bit. When you heading up Black this year?

I believe the lake in Redwood is called Butterfield Lake. Last Aug. a couple of guys in camp (Log Cabins) spent the best part of the day on Butterfield and came in with a nice stringer of crappies. They were all good size. They said they hit Butterfield if Black is rolling good. I'd like to give it a try next time up.

It looks like the week of Sept 18th. We were going to make it the week of the25th but I think Duck season opens on the 1st of Oct and we usually stay till Sun,kinda puts a damper on fishing. Since I'm NOT going to Cananda this year, I'm going to try and do another week at Black sometime, not sure when.

Pama, I fished Cranberry Lake. We would camp at the State camp ground, right on the lake. Fish SMB at Cranberry, walleyes at Carry Falls, & LMB/Northerns at the Osewegatchi River. Cranberry is a good Smallmouth lake, fish the lake where it forms two "arms".
