Fished Mon thru Thurs AM. Seems a cold front followed us up there and had things slowed down Mon. and Tues. Couldn't find the crappies in any numbers anywhere. Tried shallow, tried deeper off the bays where we usually find them. Nada. Ended at the far south end opposite Mile Arm and found a few Tues. They were in 7 FOW. Eighty two year old Norm, "The Grinder", caught and landed a 30" northern in the same bay. How he landed it on 4# test on his ultralight is beyond me. He was squealing like a little kid on Christmas. Also caught a couple nice largemouth in the same bay.
For the four days we ended up with about 20 keeper crappies with several smaller ones released. Caught lots of smallmouth with the biggest about 3 lbs and a couple of largemouth , the biggest going about 2 lbs, also lots of dink perch and several rock bass. Favorite bait was a 1/16 oz jig with a blue plastic grub body (with the split tail). (The Grindeer makes them and I think I insulted him whenever I tried anything else.) This caught almost all the crappies and many bass as well as The Grinder's pike.
I did catch one keeper walleye - 20" - off the dock in Rollaway Bay. Got it on the 1/8 oz yellow Roadrunner.
Most of the guys I talked to at Turner's had about the same luck except for three guys who on Wed limited out on crappies on the north end of the lake around Camp Carol. Don't know the exact location.
Though I've had better fishing days at Black Lake, this trip rates right up there with the best.
