The south end of Cayuga has been open a couple of weeks now. We slipped out of Toughannock for a little trout and salmon fishing. The salmon were small and the trout weren't biting. I accidently caught a 3# smallie and had a large pike bite off under the boat. Ahhh... it was good to be on open water again.
Myers was too shallow to launch from, but I guess that has changed now. ;D
"They" say that the crappie fishing is good near the south end marina this time of year. Have you ever been fishing around there?

I have a friend that was up to the Toughannock area last Wednesday and did okay on landlock salmon. He boated 3 but had both landlocks and big browns rolling on his bait. He has been going there for a few years now and being a bass fishermen at heart, likes to cast for them. His bait of prefference is a super fluke, green & white so he can see the bait. Fish south of Toughannock and look for feeder creeks, thats where they are staging, for now anyway.. Hope it might help..

Thanks Ridgrunner that confirms that I'm doing the right thing.
Can you help Tbone? He's looking for Crappie.
His comment got me looking on the web for slab crappie. I saw some wonderful stories about lake of the woods and rainy lake. Has anyone made a trip to Minnesota for the 2 pounders?

Hey TBone, I don't fish for crappie at Cayuga but if the hot spots map is right?? You can fish up near the railroad bridge, mainly along the shore line to left of it or give the edge of the chanels up near mud lock a try. The map says both these areas produce right after ice out. You can access both these areas fairly easy from two different ramps. East side of the lake you can put in at Union Springs public ramp, nice ramp, good parking and the fee is a donation or on the West side of the lake at Cayuga State Park, also a nice ramp, good parking but there is a fee, was $7 last year but might not be anyone there yet. From Union Springs its about 6 miles north to the bridge, from the park about a mile or so. Hope this helps. May get some bonus yellow perch in the same areas. Ridgrunner

Thanks Ridgrunner, I know the area very well. I think I will plan a trip soon. The in laws live in Union Springs. A morning of fishing then meet the wife at her mom's. Yeah I think this will fly.

Let me know how you make out.. Could be the first trip of the year for me as well if you have any luck at all. I live about 1 1/2 hrs south of Union springs but its usually worth the trip. After season opens for the toothy critters I do pretty well at the north end for northerns and good size pickerel while I'm waiting for bass season to open. When that action is slow you can always find some perch or bluegill action somewhere.. Good luck..

Did not make it to Cayuga but had some luck in Canandaigua lake. Fished north end right in front of Kershaw park in about 3, 4 feet of water. It is easy to find them look for all the boats next to each other. I will say it was alot of fun and the people were great. Everyone was sharing info and it helped all of us have a nice trip. Our boat ened up with about 20 keeper crappies. A worm on a slip bobber ended up working best. I still like casting with a road runner of something better, but when they hit the worm what you going to do. Going to try Cayuga next week I HOPE.

I fished from shore at mud lock on cayuga. I only had about an hour while the kids took a nap. I diden't get any but saw many fish caught. There must have been 30 people fishing from shore. The water is very high but it was nice out.

Thanks TBone, Going to take this week and start getting the boat ready for the lake. The weather might actually co-operate for a change. I work weekends so during the week is my weekend. When I do get to Cayuga will be sure to fill everyone in on the results, good or bad. Thanks for the tips!

Yeah I have been working on my boat. I have to put the docks in this month as well. I tend to stay at Honeoye once the boat is docked. At least till bass season opens. If you ever go to Honeoye let me know , I can hook you up on some hot spots. If you fish during the week , this is a nice place to come. Very busy on the weekends. Lots of bucket months and great walleye fishing. They had to lower the size to 15 in. They started to take the lake over. I tend to find alot of taged fish. DEC want you to call the # in. Cant wait for the Cayuga report

Took a ride out to Honeyoye about two weeks ago to see how long it would take from my place here near Owego to get to the lake and unfortunately its about 2 hours without trailering the boat. But if I get the chance I for sure will be begging for the hot spots, Thanks a bunch. So many lakes, so little time.

I was wondering how the Pike fishing on the finger lakes is particularly Seneca. My sister lives there and I thought it would make a nice weekend trip. FISHNGUY

Seneca can blow up pretty rough. If you are prepared for that you can probably find some good fish.
I prefer Cayuga's North end. We launch at Union Springs. The fishing is good just south of Frontenac Island all the way up to the RR bridge. We generally troll but there are some good weedy areas for casting.
I got a 38" Northern south of Frontenac just this last Fall. I'm making plans to be there this weekend - I hope Mother's Day doesn't get in the way.
